I find it hard to believe that the Biltmore loses tens of thousands of dollars every month and still remains open – that must be an exaggeration. Still, I hope their business picks up because if we lose both Richards and the Biltmore we’re screwed.

I was surprised to learn that the Biltmore lost so much money myself. I hope it’s an exaggeration on Zak’s part, but it’s hard to say. I haven’t met him in person. Don’t know if he tends towards hyperbole or not. Jordie

I like and generally agree with the sentiment of this article, but offering up the Donnelly Pub Group as an alternative to the Granville area is laughable. DPG is just as bad as the Granville area for packaging and selling ‘going out fun’ just in a slightly different way that appeals a bit less to the suburbans.

I don’t think that the Donnelly Group is being “offered up as an alternative to the Granville area”… or at least that’s not the way I read it. I thought they were interviewing and looking at Donnelly as a prime example of that commodified, corporate nightlife.

“While a downtown full of Donnelly-style venues might be good for business, this apparent homogenization isn’t great for culture.”

Donnelly is presented as the mainstream, not the alternative to it.

    Great article!

Donnelly is right, there are other places out there other than Granville. There are great bars and clubs peppered around gastown. Library square (mentioned in the article) is off Granville and doesn’t play much top 40 stuff, especially on the 90s nights. Honey on Pender and Abbot plays a fantastic mix of music with everything from the 60s to today, leaving out all the current mainstream crap.

There are also more live music venues than you mention. How about Venue (formerly the plaza club)? The Blarney Stone always has their house band on every weekend (I don’t know how those guys do it, they must be going on 60) and has other local bands every now and then. Ceili’s has a house band, the buffalo club was on Granville but closed.

I am not saying we have a fantastic selection of live venues, but it isn’t as bad as this article makes it seem.

Oh and the reason most Granville clubs are the same is because they all gather around each other so the people who like those places will be more likely to go there if the line at their choice is too big. Kind of like the reason there are 4 skate shops within a block on W4th.

the government’s retention on culture is anal at best. i called my mla russ hiebert and he never responds. now he is claiming taxpayer money for lotteries to gain favour in public transfers. who are these assholes who think they own our pockets? “time to throw the rascals out!” – hog of the forsaken, michael hurley

And the Hog of the Forsaken got no reason to cry,
He got to chew the angels fallin’ from on hiiigh,
He ain’t waitin’ for no answers, bakin’ woeful pie,
Pie of eyesight, pie boot-black, oh that pie,
    The pie of by-and-by.

And the Hog of the Forsaken he ain’t like you and I,
With bones always breakin’ and no place to go an’ lie,
He’s in the box so dark and wet, he got so much time,
He ain’t even worried yet, the Hog of the Forsaken,
He is the Pork of Crime.

And the Hog of the Forsaken, he’ll leave you one more chance,
Which, if you won’t be takin’ he’ll leave it for the ants,
He sings out in the wilderness, he sings of friend and foe,
He sings of these and those times as well as the times to go.

And the Hog of the Forsaken he swims out into the sea,
Finds the alligator gar chase the leapin’ mullet,
And chokes the water hyacinth flowin’ to the sea,
The Hog of the Forsaken, he is the hog for me!

He chokes the water hyacinth flowin’ to the sea,
The Hog of the Forsaken, he is the hog for me!
    (yeah baby, that’s right)

    and i ain’t pickton!

I find it hard to find honest reviews.

maybe my tastes differ from most people?

In my opinion Chad Vangaalen’s comedy was a nervous attempt to compensate for his un-enthused performance of music. Towards the end of the show he apologized and said something along the lines of “I feel guilty, I’m sorry”, I found it confusing. Why was he apologizing. He apologized because it was a sub-par show. My impression of the band was that they had over-rehearsed every song to the point where the music didn’t breathe. Nothing was improvised, no emotions were felt. Throughout the entire set I was anticipating something, a musical moment, passion, energy. It led nowhere. I was bored and tired in my comfy rio theater chair. I felt ripped out of my 37 or so dollars.

I wouldn’t describe any of the musicians as talented. To be fair, if possibly they are talented musicians, there was no room at all in the music for them to show or express their “talent.”

Although the fitting stereotype of a female singer/songwriting playing a ukulele and singing definitely would apply to her embodiment. Jennifer Castle was actually playing a smaller sized classical guitar with a pickup attached to amplify it. Her music was very unoriginal. My friends and I started laughing at the beginning of her set because she began without introducing herself and played guitar noodling which was awkward. On stage she sang and noodled bobbing her head from left to right looking like a dazed fish. My girlfriend beside me said “Just because your on stage right now doesn’t mean your any good. I bet there tons of more talented people in this room who deserve way more to be on this this stage than Jennifer Castle does.”

I compliment Chad Vangaalen’s warm guitar tone and stage persona. It was very heartening to see someone so comfortable in front of so many people. However, I have seen way more engaging, enjoyable shows for only the price of $5.

    Sean – a decade is 10 years. In this case, year 1 is actually year 0. 2000 to 2009 = 10 years.

  45. Ezza
    Posted December 2, 2009 at 1:32 pm | Permalink

Ah, the decade debate… Sean’s right. I graduated high school in 2001. After all the silly millennium hype in which the class of 2000 thought they were so special, we actually researched this and corrected them with our sad grad slogan… “Class of ‘01, the ’01st class of the new millennium.”

The number looks different, so we think the decade is different. But who cares. Howabout we just leave it as: it can be whatever you want it to be! Sunshine, smiles and all that.

Thanks for a great list of great local talent, Discorder! :)

  46. Posted December 2, 2009 at 3:30 pm | Permalink

Oh fuck, not you too! Dude, a decade refers to ten years. Deca meaning ten. By your definition, 1980 was part of the 70s. 1990 part of the 80s. Fuck this year zero, jesus christ Gregorian calendar bullshit.

The oughties were and are 2000-2009
The nineties were 1990-1999, not 1991-2000.

Can we put this to rest and let everyone do their damn decade lists now?

PS. seriously though, love the Beyond Robson Morning Brews. Keep ‘em coming!
