Donnelly is right, there are other places out there other than Granville. There are great bars and clubs peppered around gastown. Library square (mentioned in the article) is off Granville and doesn't play much top 40 stuff, especially on the 90s nights. Honey on Pender and Abbot plays a fantastic mix of music with everything from the 60s to today, leaving out all the current mainstream crap.

There are also more live music venues than you mention. How about Venue (formerly the plaza club)? The Blarney Stone always has their house band on every weekend (I don't know how those guys do it, they must be going on 60) and has other local bands every now and then. Ceili’s has a house band, the buffalo club was on Granville but closed.

I am not saying we have a fantastic selection of live venues, but it isn't as bad as this article makes it seem.

Oh and the reason most Granville clubs are the same is because they all gather around each other so the people who like those places will be more likely to go there if the line at their choice is too big. Kind of like the reason there are 4 skate shops within a block on W4th.

I don't think that the Donnelly Group is being "offered up as an alternative to the Granville area"... or at least that's not the way I read it. I thought they were interviewing and looking at Donnelly as a prime example of that commodified, corporate nightlife.

"While a downtown full of Donnelly-style venues might be good for business, this apparent homogenization isn’t great for culture."

Donnelly is presented as the mainstream, not the alternative to it.

Great article!

I like and generally agree with the sentiment of this article, but offering up the Donnelly Pub Group as an alternative to the Granville area is laughable. DPG is just as bad as the Granville area for packaging and selling 'going out fun' just in a slightly different way that appeals a bit less to the suburbans.

I was surprised to learn that the Biltmore lost so much money myself. I hope it's an exaggeration on Zak's part, but it's hard to say. I haven't met him in person. Don't know if he tends towards hyperbole or not. Jordie

I find it hard to believe that the Biltmore loses tens of thousands of dollars every month and still remains open - that must be an exaggeration. Still, I hope their business picks up because if we lose both Richards and the Biltmore we're screwed.
